Welcome
Welcome to the web site of the ColdFusion User Group of WA. We hold monthly meetings on the 3rd Wednesday in Perth, Western Australia, where like-minded developers get together and talk all things ColdFusion.
All are welcome - sign up to our mailing list to meet a great bunch of people and find out more information about where and when we get together.
What is ColdFusion?
Not one, but TWO ColdFusion conferences in Australia
February 18, 2009
Proving that ColdFusion is not only alive and well but flourishing, there are now two conferences with ColdFusion content in Australia.
WebDU dates for 2009 have been announced: 21-22 May in Sydney. Now in it's seventh year, WebDU has a long history of providing great content and this year is sure to be a ripper with a new version of ColdFusion, codenamed Centaur, speculated to be released to public beta sometime before the conference. WebDU has five tracks, so as well as ColdFusion you can catch sessions on Flash, Flex, Mobile Development, Web Development, and User Experience.
Although still incomplete, the speaker list and agenda are available, as are early bird tickets (only until the 28th of February however, so don't delay).
New to our hemisphere is cf.Objective(ANZ), the Enterprise ColdFusion conference which has been running in the US for the past few years, to be held in Melbourne 12-13 November. This conference is targeted at developers looking for in-depth coverage of advanced ColdFusion topics.
Tickets, speakers and agendas are still to be announced but this is definitely one to keep an eye on.

Special guest for delayed October meeting
October 28, 2008
Our October meeting has been pushed back into early November, but for good reason: we have a special guest speaker, Kai Koenig.
Kai, who now lives in Wellington, New Zealand, is in Perth for the Edge of the Web conference, where he will be presenting a session on Adobe AIR on Thursday the 6th November, as well as running a half-day AIR bootcamp workshop on Friday the 7th November.
Kai will also be in attendence at the 2008 WA Web Awards dinner on the Friday night, cheering on the CFUGWA web site, which is a finalist in the not-for-profit category.
At the CFUGWA meeting on Tuesday the 4th of November, Kai will be presenting on PDF handling in ColdFusion 8, which he promises is way more interesting than it sounds! In particular, Kai will run over the things that CF8 can do on its own, and the things that you will need to purchase Adobe LiveCycle ES to accomplish.
This is a not-to-be missed meeting!

Adobe Creative Suite 4 Release
October 15, 2008
The new "brilliant" release from Adobe that has been hinted at over the past few weeks - Creative Suite 4 - is now shipping.
At last month's CFUGWA meeting, we watched some demo videos of the new features available - concentrating on Dreamweaver, Flash and Fireworks.
The features shown that resulted in the most interest amongst what was shown was Dreamweaver's subversion integration and the new Live view mode, and the inverse kinematics animation available in Flash.
The next big launch for us will be ColdFusion 9 - codename Centaur - although that's quite a long way off yet!

CFUGWA web site shortlisted for WA Web Award
October 03, 2008
We're pleased to announce that the new look CFUGWA web site, designed by the Clever Starfish team with FarCry CMS integration by Andrew Mercer, is a finalist in the fourth annual WA Web Awards, in the not-for-profit category.
The CFUGWA site was redesigned earlier this year after a long-running design competition amongst user group regulars. It is hosted by Fasthit Web Hosting on a managed FarCry 4 account, running on ColdFusion 8.
The site has some stiff competition in the form of YACWA Fairground Youth Conference (by Loaded Studios) and Film and Television Institute (by Papercut Media). The whole Clever Starfish team and Andrew will be at the black tie awards presentation dinner, held in the Banquet Hall of the UWA Club, on November 7 to cheer CFUGWA on. We'd love to take home a shiny WAWA!
The Clever Starfish team has two other finalists, in the Virtual Business category, and CFUGWA regular Gary Barber's blog Man With No Blog has been nominated again in the blog category, which he took out last year. We're pleased to note that local developers Sumo have two ColdFusion-powered finalists - Match Property Development Group and ScreenWest - and that CFUGWA regulars Curtin University have their new CF-powered site shortlisted in the Education category.
Best of luck to all finalists!

Special Event for September meeting
September 10, 2008
The next CFUGWA meeting - September 30, from 5.30pm at a soon-to-be-announced venue - will be a special event where Adobe will show off something "brilliant".
All we know so far is that it will be "the next big thing from Adobe". In addition, "El Presidente" Andrew Mercer has been informed that a package will be arriving soon from Adobe HQ, presumably full of schwag to share!
Of course, it wouldn't be a CFUGWA meeting without some ColdFusion goodness. As has become customary, we'll have a roundtable discussion on ColdFusion news and views, so if you have an idea, a question or even a code problem bring it along.
Looking forward to seeing you there - don't forget to RSVP to manager at cfugwa dot com.
